Less than a mile from IDEA1 is the entrance to the Central San Diego Library and whilst a run-of-the-mill library might not be considered a local perk, the San Diego Central Library is by no means average. The revitalization of San Diego’s East Village was marked by the completion of this stellar, state-of-the-art facility in 2013 and locals have been taking advantage of the offerings at the library ever since. In addition to a fully stocked and staffed library, this space is a community center with beautiful public gathering spaces and events that attract locals year round.
The San Diego Central Library is committed to bringing residents face-to-face with local, quality, and thought-provoking exhibits that will impress visitors at no cost. Currently, the gallery space is home to an exposé of photographs taken in the area at the end of the twentieth century. The show, The Dream of the Nineties, opened in late September and will be on view until the end of December 2017 but locals should check in often for new opportunities to see unique pieces and collections.
With so much community space and even an auditorium, the San Diego Central Library hosts a range of activities from guitar jam sessions to career, computer, and entrepreneurial classes. On Tuesday evenings in November, locals can enjoy a series of independent films from around the globe through the 2017 One Book Film Festival held at the library. The program began in October and will continue through the end of November. Scroll through the films and get tickets early as these shows do tend to sell out.
