Take a walk on the wild side at an internationally renowned facility. The San Diego Zoo is the perfect staycation spot for families and animal lovers. You’ll see polar bears, pink flamingos, cute pandas, rhinoceroses, and other exotic wildlife.

TripAdvisor named the San Diego institution as the number-one zoo in the world for 2015, and it’s just a quick car ride away from IDEA1.

San Diego Zoo History and Mission

San Diego Zoo Global is a non-profit organization that runs the zoo, its safari park, and the Institute for Conservation. Henry M. Wegeforth founded the organization on October 2, 1916.

The zoo has one of the world’s largest membership associations. The organization boasts more than 250,000 household and 130,000 children memberships.

All members enjoy free admission to the zoo and Safari Park, a ZOONOOZ magazine subscription, and other benefits.

Animals in Action Experience

See animals react as they would in their natural habitats in the Animals in Action Experience exhibit. Watch exotic cats, like cheetahs, climb trees and bask in the sunshine. Zoo visitors can hand-feed flamingos and watch experts train animal ambassadors.

Inside Look Tour

San Diego Zoo guests should take a once-in-a-lifetime, behind-the-scenes look at the facility during the Inside Look Tour. During the tour, you will witness the zoo’s fledgling penguin colony as well as koalas climbing eucalyptus trees. Other exhibits include the zoo’s Elephant Care Center and their primate exhibit.

Discovery Cart Tour

The zoo has a convenient, 60-minute guided tour led by knowledgeable zoo experts. The Discovery Tour Route includes secluded areas of the zoo not seen during the regular guided tour.
